William Stokoe Timeline

1919- William C. Stokoe Jr. was born on July 21 in New Hampshire. 2 1937- He attended Wells College with the in the intention to study physical chemistry, but he decided that it consumed too much time and money and decided to study English instead. 1946- William Stokoe receives his Ph. D. in English and teaches at Wells College for seven years. 2 1955- William Stokoe is hired as the head of the Department of English at Gallaudet College. It was a year later he was first exposed to deaf people signing.Stokoe decides to research signing because, unlike the opinions of many of his colleagues, he viewed signing as its own distinctive language. 2 1957- Stokoe receives a research grant from the American Council of Learned Societies to begin analyzing ASL as a language. Two years later, The National Science Foundation continued the funding for his study. 1-2 1960- Stokoe publishes his first book on the research he conducted on signing, titled Sign Language Structure: An Outline of the Visua l Communication Systems of the American Deaf. -2 1965- Stokoe, along with Carl Croneberge and Dorothy Casterline, published his second book A Dictionary of American Sign Language on Linguistic Principles. This book includes Stokoe’s development of a written notation for ASL. This book also helped Stokoe’s ideas gain wide acceptance and prove the legitimacy of sign language as an independent, fully developed language. 1-2 1971- Gallaudet University established a Linguistic Research Lab with Stokoe as the director until 1984.In the same year, he starts the publication of the newsletter, â€Å"Signs of Our Times†. 1-2 – The first presentation of information about ASL takes place at the conference held by James Woodward, at the Linguistics Society of America. Globalization and its Impact on Women’s education Worldwide Globalization is defined as the worldwide movement toward financial, economic, and communication integration. Globalization has improved the lives of women worldwide, especially the lives of women living in developing countries. However, women remain disadvantaged in many aspects in life including health, employment, rights, and education. In this essay, I will discuss the impact of globalization on women worldwide, mainly on their participation in education. Although many advantages were gained, there is still worldwide inequality in education. According to the UNESCO, inequality in education is directly connected to poverty (Globalization 101)[1]. Studies have shown that more female children are not attending than male children in poor areas. Sub-Saharan Africa, Western Asia, and Oceana still face challenges reaching gender inequality for primary education. On the other hand, the Caribbean, Eastern Asia, and Latin America have more female students than male students going on to secondary education. In extremely poor or rural areas, females are less likely to have any type of education. In many of the world’s poorest countries located in Sub Saharan Africa, the Arab States, and West Asia the education of females in many is not valued because they are expected to contribute more at home, while males should gain skills to work and support their families. According to the UNESCO, the elimination of inequality in education would help lessen poverty in general. Also, female education has indirect effects for society such as improved fertility rates, improved child health, and improved educational opportunities for everyone in the household. In addition, increased skill levels allow women to participate more in the economy, which will increase the economic prosperity of the family (Globalization 101)[1]. Although globalization has opened markets worldwide, increased profits, and created more jobs for all countries and citizens, this neo-liberal model has increased poverty in many parts of the world and deepened the inequalities within the nations. Globalization has caused the rich to be richer and the poor to be poorer. Globalization mainly affects women because majority of the world’s poor are women (Shortchanging women WEDO)[2]. Also, structural adjustment policies with their elimination of subsidies, attendant price increases, and social services decreases, have increased the vulnerability of women and children where the distribution of the provision of health care and education favor income earning adults or men. Structural adjustment causes women hold responsibility of dealing with increased priced and income decrease. With increased unemployment and decreased wages for men, the responsibility is placed upon the women and children to take part of economic activity in order to support the household. In Peru, One study found that the effects of economic crisis and structural adjustment led to a significant increase in poverty. Structural adjustment policies and other forms of neo-liberalism are a major factor behind the â€Å"feminization of poverty†(Moghadam 1999)[3]. Although globalization offers women great opportunities, women are faced with equal new challenges. Women are still disadvantaged in many areas in their lives such as education. Gender inequality in education is still occurring in many developing countries, and it is directly connected to poverty. It is believed that eliminating gender inequality in education would lessen poverty. Eudaimonia was reached when there was ‘nothing missing’ from a life. Therefore, a good life was also a ‘complete’ life. He also specifically identifies human goodness with psychological goodness rather than a material or physical goodness. His happiness is of the mind, rather than of the body (Parry). These are just a few facets of the more complex notion of eudaimonia or happiness that Aristotle defines in his treatises. This idea however has evolved over the years and ‘goodness’ or a ‘good life’ today does not necessarily have to do with serving one’s ‘function’ or leading a purely virtuous life. There has even been the question of whether goodness or happiness is really of the mind alone. Bill Clegg and Matthew Dickman are two contemporary writers who present rather different opinions on what makes an excellent life. Bill Clegg’s memoir Ninety Days traces his progress through ninety days of rehabilitation from drug addiction while Dickman’s poems touch upon many contemporary issues found in relationships like gender roles, abuse, and pain, among others. These two writers present rather different views on what makes a ‘good life’ and this paper will explore how they compare to each other as well as to Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia. Bill Clegg, in his autobiographical work, Ninety Days, formulates a set of principles that, to him, make a life worth living. He traces his descent into drug addiction and back again into sobriety in the memoir. One of the key requirements, according to Clegg’s worldview, to moving towards a good life, is honesty; honesty with one’s friends and family, but most importantly, honesty with oneself. This honesty needs to be coupled with a stric t regime to recover from any negative or debilitating experience like turning into an addict. Clegg’s own commitment to rehabilitation, as recorded in Ninety Days, is not free from trouble. He has a relapse, for instance, when just three days away from his goal and yet he starts again. Clegg, therefore, leaves room for mistakes and believes in a greater redemptive power that can overcome weakness. Another one of Clegg’s requirements for a good life is the need to establish contact with others. For instance, at one point, when he has only sixteen more days to go, he has to move out from Noah’s apartment when he is not there. However, he needs to have a friend, Sai, with him while he moves out only to have a ‘glamorous force field’ around him to make him feel better and stronger when he reenters the building he left on a stretcher for the first time. This need for companionship and the value that Clegg attaches to forming human relationships is missin g from Aristotle’s idea. Clegg’s friend in rehab, Polly, is another example of how Clegg considers establishing human contact with others as an instrumental part of getting sober and back to living a good life again. However, the ICTY is considered a subsidiary organ of the UN, and the legal basis for the Security's Council power to establish the Tribunal is set out in article 39, Chapter VII of the Charter of the UN, that empowers the Security Council to take actions to maintain and restore international peace and security (Wortzel (1999):381). Also, this Chapter allows a tribunal to exercise primacy without the consent of the State. Another justification is the principle of universal jurisdiction where some crimes are so offensive as to give all states jurisdiction over the accused. Likewise, the Statute for the ICTY (art. 1) is clear as to the Tribunal's geographic and temporal jurisdiction stating that it "shall have the power to prosecute persons responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committ ed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991 in accordance with the provisions of the Statute." He was accused under command responsibility for planning, instigating, ordering, aiding to commit these crimes.
